My Review of the Herbal Medic

My Review of the Herbal Medic

So I have a little secret to tell you, I’m a survival herbalist. You might be thinking what the heck is that? Well, when I look at plants, I don’t just think, oh what a pretty smell or how beautiful the color is, I think “If things collapse and we have no modern medicine what can I use around me to help my family and community stay healthy or heal wounds and injuries.”

Herbal Medic

This book maybe one of the greatest herbal medicine books I have come across to date. The author Sam Coffman is both an herbalist and a former Green Beret medic. He’s well versed in plants and emergencies. Two things I think about all the time. I’m always outside often times in remote locations and medical attention by a doctor or nurse is often 30 minutes to hours away.

Herbal medic is written is a way they is extremely well organized, accessible for the newbie and a quick reference for those who are already experienced.

He separates the book into four parts:

  • The Orthodox First Aid Kit

  • The Herbal First Aid Kit

  • The Herbal Medic in Action

  • Materia Medica

Now if you are really into herbal remedies like I am you might have scoffed at the first part. However, he made an excellent point that having two parts to your first aid kit, one with traditional things, like bandages and tweezers and a few over the counter medicines is important because you may try to help someone who isn’t comfortable putting a poultice of chewed up plantain on their cut and would prefer neosporine and a bandaid.

A page from The Herbal Medic by Sam Coffman about The Mucosa of the body

Part two the Herbal first Aid Kit is a concise and very accessible introduction or review of the basics of herbal medicine. He reviews each part of the body and it’s systems herbs that tend to support those systems. He explains various methods of making herbal salves, tinctures, extracts and more.

a page from The Herbal Medic by Same Coffman about degree of burns

Part three The Herbal Medic in Action is one of my favorites. I recently had to use it for my daughter who got a severe sunburn and I wasn’t sure how to diagnose the severity. I quickly turned to this page in the book and was able to figure out a protocol for helping her body heal.

Part four is a fantastic Materia Medica and well worth purchasing the book to add to your collection.

The Herbal Medic is an absolute must have for every family. What I love is that is has easily understandable instructions for dealing with just about any situation you might encounter. From sunburns, and broken arms to dealing with heart attacks and birthing a baby. All wonderful information to have in your knowledge bank. Best of all, it’s paired with the herbs that best help support the body for that situation.

I hope you get this book and find it as helpful as I do. Please leave a comment below if you have this book or are interested in survival herbalism.

Have a great day!

Kathryn
