Garden Update: August
The light has changed and it looks like fall, but the leaves haven’t turned yet. The light has a warmer glow and the sun’s intensity has lessened enough I almost don’t need a sun shirt when I work in the garden anymore.
In the garden plants are so heavy with fruits ready to ripen. We’ve had to stake many of the peppers due to the weight of the fruit. We must really be doing something right this year. The ears of corn are as thick as my forearm. There are melons getting ready to fall off the vines. There are even a few crops like strawberries giving it a second go at producing fruit.
Everyday we’ve harvested blackberries from the berry patch. There is such a bumper crop this year that we are freezing enough to fill gallon bags and still make jam.
We are trying our hand at growing cut flowers this year. Specifically, zinnias and dahlias. Dahlias might be one of the most spectacular flowers. There is something like 50,000 + cultivars which means endless options. There is a dahlia for everyone. These are just a few of the ones that have opened in the last 48 hours.
Soon it will be time to harvest potatoes, carrots, and the remaining onions along with celery, corn, and rutabagas.
How are your gardens doing in this late summer time?
