Hello!

Welcome to the Nettlesome Life. I document my adventures in herbal soap making, growing food, foraging for wild edibles and making things by hand. Hope you have a nice stay!

Do you winter hike?

Do you winter hike?

As much as I love gardening in the summer and being surrounded by lots and lots of plants, I love winter. Winter in Utah is especially beautiful because there is snow and lots of sunshine. Since the ground is frozen and there is no gardening to be done I have taken to doing winter hikes. I love them. The other day it was 14℉, that didn’t stop me at all. I bundled up in all my wool and snow gear and headed out. I trudged through the snow, breathing in the chilly air and feeling so alive. Nothing like filling your lungs with fresh, clean, cold air to clear away any feeling of stuffiness or congestion.

The other reason I love winter hikes is because all of your focus goes into every step. If you are walking through deep snow each missed step could lead to you being thigh deep in snow. It’s much like a walking meditation, mind focused only on the task at hand, not on the dishes or taxes or what to make for dinner. Just you and the crunch of the snow.

Do you like winter? Do you get out and enjoy the cold? Let me know in the comments below. And if you haven’t hiked in the winter, I highly recommend you try it this year!
