Hello!

Welcome to the Nettlesome Life. I document my adventures in herbal soap making, growing food, foraging for wild edibles and making things by hand. Hope you have a nice stay!

Winter Hiking Season Has Begun!

Winter Hiking Season Has Begun!

With winter comes time for outdoor play. In the summer I am so busy gardening and harvesting and processing food that much of my time outdoor is spent working rather than in leisure. But winter is here and so is the snow and my snow shoes are by the door along with my Traks walking over ice ground. Every chance I get, I bundle up and get outside. Sometimes it will be a gorgeous sunny day and other times it will be snowy and dark. Some of my favorites times to get out are when it’s exceptionally cold like 20º and below. That’s when you start to get ice crystals forming on your scarf because your breath freezes!

You see some really spectacular views out in the snowy lands. The air is so crisp and clean and there’s hardly a sound but your own “swish, swish” through the snow or the “crunch, crunch” of ice under your boots.

It’s the perfect time to start looking for animal tracks too. From birds and rabbits to foxes and moose,( but hopefully not to close!)

Also now is a great time to start looking at plants in their hibernation state or looking for those plants who survive under the snow. Some even keep growing. There’s nothing like finding a patch of bright green in all the brown and white.
