Garden Update: February
It was 48° this past weekend. A fantastic time to get out into the garden and see what’s happening. To my surprise, as I crouched down to check things out, I found that the garden is waking up! From garlic to blueberries, snap dragons and more. It was an exciting day!
Peaking into the low tunnel I found the leeks and garlic happy as could be. I also found a few carrots that had been overlooked. Still sweet and crisp and delicious. Soon enough it will be time to plant them again.
I inspected the herb bed and found that all of my herbs had survived the winter. Pictured above is yarrow (achillea millefolium) with its new growth. This one is a pink, flowered variety. In addition, the rosemary, oregano, thyme, lavender, St. John’s Wort, lemon balm and even parsley made it through so far. As we still have some more snow storms coming, I’m not going to uncover them from their low tunnel just yet.
Even the garden gnome is ready to start a new season. This weekend’s weather makes it very hard to look forward to another snow storm. Being buried under 5-10 inches of snow is not exactly what I am looking for. However, I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. The more precipitation we can get, the better since our summers here are very dry.
And last, but not least, I potted up a few herb plants we had started back in very late December. Having fresh basil in the middle of the winter is pretty awesome. It was definitely worth the experiment.
What is happening in your area? Snow, rain? Are you heading towards spring or fall?
