Garden Update: April
I started to write an update in March and then things kind of ground to a halt. As homeschoolers, our lives haven’t changed all that much except for the fact that we can’t have play dates, library visits or park days. Otherwise, it’s life as usual around here. The only outings that have been happening here have been foraging walks or visits to the other garden spaces.
March was quite cold and wet. We had snow, frost and rain for weeks on end. The garden stayed covered until the very end of the month when things started to thaw and stay relatively warm at night. We planted out beets, several varieties of kale, chard and radishes.
Now that we have more sunny days than not, things are really starting to take off. All the radishes are up, beets are looking quite perky and the greens are all putting on lots of new growth. Before I know it, I’ll need to put a new, taller lower tunnel over greens as they continue to grow.
Tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are all sprouted and putting out their first true leaves. It’s reassuring to know that life goes on as it should, despite the craziness we are experiencing with a global pandemic and oncoming economic depression. These plants just do their thing, make fruits and assume someone will eat them and spread the season somewhere else. It makes me feel grounded knowing the natural world continues on.
Here are some more beautiful plant pictures from the garden and some of our most recent walks:
Also! My other gig is for Sparkle Stories. I just made a tutorial for homemade masks. You can check it out HERE.
