Garden Update: March

Garden Update: March

Purple crocus growing out of cedar mulch.

The other day as I was pulling into my driveway I saw something purple at the edge of lawn. I knew immediately what it was, a crocus! We put these arbitrary dates on the seasons, to help us organize our lives, but really the plants know what’s up. They know spring is coming before we do. Even though we have a few more cold night in our future the plants know it’s fine to start the mad race of growth and fruiting. The mint is coming up and apple trees are starting to open their little leaf buds. Soon I’m sure I will see the sage green up again along with the thyme and rosemary.

Orange carrots being washed in a blue kiddie pool.

We recently pulled all of the over wintered carrots out of the ground. There is nothing like a sweet crunchy carrot after months of canned or frozen veggies. We’ve been waiting for the ground to thaw enough to dig up the carrots without snapping them. The funny thing is, that in just another month or so it will be time to plant carrots again. Just yesterday we planted snap peas and I potted up flower seedlings.

Home grown spring brassicas, kale, cabbage, box choi.

Our main spring crops are ready to planted in the ground. I’ve become impatient on some of them like the kale and have been sneaking off lower leaves to eat. Forget planting the lettuce, I already ate it all. I’ll just have to direct sow.

This next moth will be all about bring the garden back online so to speak. Cleaning up the beds, fixing the high tunnels, and planting out all our crops for the year. The beginning of planting season is such an excting time. It always fills me with hope and the will to succeed.

How is your garden doing? Are you still buried in snow? Do you the flowers coming up too? Please share in the comments below.
