Hello!

Welcome to the Nettlesome Life. I document my adventures in herbal soap making, growing food, foraging for wild edibles and making things by hand. Hope you have a nice stay!

Fall Purple Corn Harvest

Fall Purple Corn Harvest

This year we grew purple corn as a filler for other corn plants that didn’t germinate. This was corn we’d grown a few years before and apparently a blood butcher kernel was in the mix! This red corn made the most delicious corn bread.

If you’ve never tried cornbread from fresh dent corn you have been missing out! Albeit grinding your own cornmeal is hardworking, but totally worth it! Fresh cornmeal makes some of the sweetest moist cornbread you’ll ever taste. Plus you can have it in any shade of corn your grow. The red corn makes a pink corn bread, purple makes purple-y/blue, and of course yellow corn makes the traditional yellow color.

Corn is easy to grown and makes an incredible food staple. High in protein and vitamins. Once dried the kernels will stay good in a air tight container for a couple of years.

I highly recommend growing and storing your own corn if you are worried at all about supply chain issues or food scarcity. You can eat corn in so many ways, it never gets boring. From cornbread and polenta to hominy and Johnny cakes. There’s always a delicious way to eat corn.
