Four Tips to Freshen Up Your Skin for Spring

Four Tips to Freshen Up Your Skin for Spring

In the last few days I’ve noticed a change in my skin. It’s feeling a little dryer than usual which tells me that the dry air of winter and being inside with less sunlight it starting to take it’s toll. Spring is still a month or more away but there are things you can do to help fresh up your skin if you are seeing the same thing I am.

Your skin is the largest organ in your your body. It takes a lot of abuse and needs lots of help to stay healthy and fresh. Things that can affect your skin are the amount of water you drink, good fats in your diet, humidity, air pollination (both indoor and outdoor), skincare products, sun exposure or lack there of, and genetics.

Another thing to think about is your body’s constitution. Are you generally cold and dry or warm and dry. That can help you decide what foods and drinks might better serve your skin.

While I can’t do anything about the dry winter air or pollution, there are four things I can easily do today to help my skin feel better.

Four Tips to Freshen Up Your Skin

  • Drink lots of water. No coffee, tea and sports drinks don’t count as both are astringent and drying. Tea only counts if it’s herbal and formulated to be emolument and moistening. If you live near a natural spring definitely try to drink that water. We have one near by and water without chlorine in it makes a big difference in skin health.

  • Sun exposure. Since it’s winter still you probably aren’t getting enough sun. Your body needs sun exposure to synthesize vitamin D. Exposure to a moderate amount of UV can also help with production of new skin cells. Getting direct sun on your torso and thighs for 20-30 minutes in the winter can do wonders.

  • Dry Brushing. Dry brushing is a super easy way to help remove dead skin cells and help freshen up your skin. Dry brushing not only loosens and removes dead cells it also stimulates circulation in the skin helping to bring new blood and oxygen to the surface of your skin. Making it look healthier and more rosy. It’s recommend that you brush towards your heart to help improve blood flow. For example, brush in one long stroke from your wrist to your shoulder.

  • Use natural soaps. Yes this tip is a plug for my soaps, but they are created with this very issue in mind. Big box soaps can be so drying and strip the natural oils from your skin. Anything with sodium lauryl sulfate in it will absolute break havoc on your skin. Ever wonder why it feels like your mouth is slothing off a layer of skin after you use conventional tooth paste? SLS is the reason why. Also big box soaps remove the glycerine from their soap before curing and this makes the soap more drying to your skin. Small batch soap don’t do this and are much more skin friendly.

Try changing just these four things if you are experiencing dull dry skin. You’ll find your skin will thank you and be ready in time for warmer weather.
